Traceroute tracks the route packets take across an IP network on their way to a given host It utilizes the IP protocol's time to live (TTL) field and attempts to elicit an ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED response from each gateway along the path to the host.
Ping uses the ICMP protocol's mandatory ECHO_REQUEST datagram to elicit an ICMP ECHO_RESPONSE from a host or gateway. ECHO_REQUEST datagrams ("pings") have an IP and ICMP header, followed by a struct timeval and then an arbitrary number of 'pad' bytes used to fill out the packet.
MTR combines the functionality of the traceroute and ping programs in a single network diagnostic tool. As MTR starts, it investigates the network connection between the host MTR runs on and the destination host. This allows MTR to print the response percentage and response times of the internet route to the host.
